- Biography
- Jane Matilda Bolin, judge, was born in Poughkeepsie, New York, in 1908. She was the first black female graduate of Yale Law School (1931); the first black woman to join the New York bar (1932); and became the first black woman judge in the United States when she was named a justice of the New York City Domestic Relations Court (later renamed the New York Family Court) in 1939. She would remain on the court until her retirement in 1978, and would also work in civil rights and child-care issues. Judge Bolin died in Queens, New York, in 2007.
