Genre/Form
Embroidered bindings (Binding) – United States – 20th century.
Note
  • Executed on order for the Spencer Collection.
  • There are four engrossed pages of an explanatory key to the symbolism of the illuminations. Mrs. Norman says: "The aim of the illustrator has been to stimulate the beholder to search for a spiritual significance, and not present a mere illustration which would excite no effort to study, for usually literal illustration connects the mind with material expression, whereas symbolism elevates thought to the Divine." There is a full-page symbolical title to Ecclesiastes; other pages have either full border decorations or partially decorated borders, and especially the lower borders are generally given over to panels or ovals with individual miniatures. The variety of motives are the creations of Mrs. Norman.
Binding (note)
  • Binding of hand embroidery executed by Mrs. Norman in 1920-1922. On the front cover the Preacher holding a chalice, with peacock, doves, etc., and an arbor of clusters of grapes made of very minute strung pearls; the back cover has a center oval of flames. The peacock symbolises Truth and Vanity in relation to Ecclesiates, and the dove of peace is from the Song of Solomon.
