80 prints on medium cream laid paper : etching, aquatint, drypoint, engraving, burnishing; 20.1 x 14.5 cm. or smaller.
Summary
Complete first edition set of Los caprichos. Many of the subjects deal with animals, fantasy and witchcraft, including cats, donkeys, goats, monkeys, owls, sleep, superstitions, witches and witchcraft trials. Other subjects include satires on crones, kidnappings, marriage, monks, prisoners and prostitution.

  • Printed in sepia ink. The ink, along with the paper, corresponds to the description of the first edition by Tomás Harris, Goya: engravings and lithographs.
  • D82 bears a scratch mark that, according to Tomás Harris, Goya: engravings and lithographs, first appeared early in the printing of the first edition.
  • D42, D53, D64, D79, D83, D104 and D107 exhibit foul biting or stray marks in the margins. Tomás Harris describes foul biting and stray marks that appear in the first edition of the margins of the preceding plates as well as D50.
  • Prints are unbound but accompanied by a mottled calf cover, with gold letters on red on the spine: Caprichos de Goya. According to Tomás Harris, such a binding was used for some first edition sets. The binding bears a book plate of Samuel Putnam Avery and his inscription in pencil "Purchased at sale of D. G. Rossetti's effects London June 7, 1882 Lot 458"
