80 prints on moderately thick cream wove paper : etching, aquatint, drypoint, lavis, engraving, burnishing; 15 x 19.3 cm. or smaller.
Summary
Complete first edition set of Los desastres de la guerra. Prints depict the horrors of the Peninsular War and the subsequent famine in Spain. Subjects include bayonets, canons, combat, death and the dead, dismemberment, famine victims, firing squads, hanging, mass burials, rape, rifles, soldiers, starvation, torture, war and wolves. Also includes the Caprichos enfáticos, satires whose subjects include bats, cats, the clergy, dogs, donkeys, foxes, horses, monks, owls and vultures.
