The Neighborhood Playhouse, started in 1915 at the Henry Street Settlement by Irene and Alice Lewisohn, was the home to many early 20th century American modern dancers and artists, including Louis Horst, Martha Graham, Charles Weidman, Doris Humphrey et al.
