Summary
The collection is divided into nine chronological series reflecting Williams' career and includes Personal Papers, National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, California Attorney General's Office, Peace Corps, U.S. Ambassador to UNESCO, Ambassador To Ghana, Columbia University Urban Center, Phelps Stokes Fund Years and Writings and Miscellany. Very little of the material in the collection can be considered of a private nature. There is scattered correspondence with family members and close friends, the vast majority of the collection deals with Williams' public work.

  • Franklin Hall Williams was an African-American civil rights lawyer, diplomat, and foundation president who worked towards fostering better relations between the black and white communities in the U.S. and between the African-American community and Africa.
  • Williams held many positions, among them was the West Coast regional director for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), 1951-1956; California Assistant Attorney General, 1959-1961; Special Assistant, Peace Corps, 1961-1963; U.S. Ambassador to the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations, 1963-1965; U.S. Ambassador to Ghana, 1965-1968; director, Columbia University Urban Center, 1968-1970; president of Phelps-Stokes Fund, 1970-1990. Williams died in 1990.
