  • Dame Myra Hess (1890-1965) was an English pianist. During the Second World War she organized and performed in hundreds of lunch time concerts at the National Gallery which had been emptied because of the threat of air raids. Marjorie Yates, a pianist and friend of Myra Hess, was born in England and moved in 1926 to the United States, where she taught music until 1968. Henriette Michelson was a piano teacher at The Juilliard School in New York City during the 1930's and 1940's, and later a resident of Jerusalem. Tobias Matthay (1858-1945) was an English piano teacher, author of works on piano technique, and composer.
