- Biography
- The AMAS Musical Theatre (formerly the AMAS Repertory Theatre) was founded in New York by actress Rosetta LeNoire, in 1969, as a multi-racial company that developed and produced musical theater. It also provided opportunities for writers, composers and lyricists to create work free from the pressures of commercial theater. Since the 1970s AMAS has sponsored a youth theater offering young people training in music theory, drama, vocal technique, dance movement and stagecraft. AMAS has also worked with or performed for school groups, adult workshops and senior citizen centers. The troupe has won a number of awards for its outstanding contributions to American theater. Notable AMAS productions include the 1976 Tony-nominated "Bubbling Brown Sugar," which ran on Broadway for two years, "Mama I Want to Sing" and "Conrack."
