Summary Cassette 1 (ca. 80 min.) 8/23/02. Ping Chong speaks about his family background; growing up in Chinatown; first meeting Meredith Monk and the group of artists with whom she was working; Monk's Needle-brain Lloyd and the systems kid and Vessel; the beginnings of his own work and the themes in which he was interested; various pieces of his including Fear and loathing in Gotham; the progression of major themes in his work; people with whom he worked; film and other influences on his art; the piece Paris/Chacon/Venice/Milan [Monk and Chong]; memories from travelling in Europe; the piece Raw recital [Monk and Preston]; more on Vessel; his issues with being in someone else's work or collaborating; collaborating with Monk on Games [Monk and Chong]; Monk's attitude toward her own creative process; the piece the Race and more on Games.
Cassette 2 (ca. 90 min.) 8/24/02. Remembers tour experiences when performing Quarry; his favorite works by Monk; his own work including Nuit blanche and Humboldt's Current and the themes that run through them; how he teaches his works; his first installation piece and his subsequent experiences in the visual art world; his Angels of Swedenborg; his changing philosophy of art particularly in respect to the conflict between East and West; briefly discusses Deshima and Chinoiserie; his use of dramaturges; his piece, Undesirable elements; the theme of "otherness" in his work; his relationship to his own Chinese heritage; his works for video, Plage concrete and I will not be sad in this world; his interest in and reservations about working in film; his piece Edda that was performed in the Faroe Islands; his experiences creating Obon.
