- Cassette 1, 7/03/02 (ca. 85 min.). Mr. Vela discusses his family background, his childhood and racial issues growing up half Mexican in southern Texas; his interest in France and French; his teaching job at Goddard College; his first experiences as a director and the way it transformed his life; studying theater at Yale; returning to Goddard's Theater Department from 1965-1975; meeting Meredith Monk there; his roles in Monk's Vessel, Quarry, and Specimen days; Monk's rehearsal process; working as associate director with Monk in Atlas; auditioning opera singers for that work; more on creative process as well as his time at Goddard; working as associate director on Monk's American archeology; aspects of working on Specimen days and Book of days; creating text for Monk's works; the relationship between text, movement, and singing; discussion throughout about the interplay between freedom and form in Monk's work.

Mr. Vela discusses working with both experienced and inexperienced performers; the re-creation of Quarry; stories from touring; his favorite roles with Monk; audience reception of her work; Monk's versatility in respect to her venues and audience; changes in her work over time.
