Summary
The Stambolian papers chiefly document his work as a writer and editor. The collection includes correspondence and collateral papers concerning the preparation of the MEN ON MEN anthologies and HOMOSEXUALITIES AND FRENCH LITERATURE, interviews he conducted for MALE FANTASIES/GAY REALITIES (1984), and manuscripts and clippings of his essays, lectures, and interviews. The papers also include some of his files used in the preparation for the courses he taught at Wellesley College, his subject files on gay topics, and a small amount of personal correspondence, documents and memorabilia, including an audiotaped inteview with his parents regarding their life in Armenia and a videotaped interview with Stambolian regarding gay life at the University of Wisconsin in the 1960s. Correspondents include Dennis Cooper, Eric Garber, Allan Gurganus, Elaine Marks, and Edmund White.

  • George Stambolian (1938-1991), writer, editor, and college professor was an important figure in the gay literary world of the 1980s. He edited the highly acclaimed anthologies MEN ON MEN: BEST NEW GAY FICTION (1986; 1988; 1990; 1992) and wrote frequently for CHRISTOPHER STREET and the NEW YORK NATIVE. Stambolian taught in the French Department of Wellesley College fom 1966 to 1991. His academic works include MARCEL PROUST AND THE CREATIVE ENCOUNTER (1972), TWENTIETH CENTURY FRENCH FICTION: ESSAYS FOR GERMAINE BREE (1975), and HOMOSEXUALITIES AND FRENCH LITERATURE (1979).
