- Biography
The Muhlenberg Branch of The New York Public Library opened in 1906 at 209 West 23rd Street in Manhattan. It was one of the 65 branches built from funds given to New York City by Andrew Carnegie. Designed by architects Carrere and Hastings, the branch is named for William Augustus Muhlenberg, the first rector of Chelsea's Church of the Holy Communion. Muhlenberg had donated many books to the New York Free Circulating Library, which had previously operated a branch in the neighborhood. In 2000, the branch was renovated through the Library's Adopt-A-Branch program.
