  • Cassette 1, 06/22/04 (ca. 55 min.). Moses Pendleton speaks about the social and political environment in which Pilobolus [Dance Theatre] was born and the atmosphere of life at Dartmouth College during this time; creating a dance with Michael Tracy to fulfill the requirements of Tracy's chemistry class; Pendleton's personal background; growing up in Vermont and training as a competitive skier; his life changing injury; personal relationships and early experiences with dance; encounter groups, sexual freedom and other aspects of the cultural atmosphere of the period; meeting Alison Chase and taking her class at Dartmouth.
  • Cassette 2, 06/22/04 and 06/28/04 (ca. 90 min.). Pendleton speaks about the Vermont Natural Theater Company; the beginnings of Pilobolus; classes and people that he sees as key influences including Murray Louis and Alwin Nikolais; his interest in collective work and experience throughout his time at Dartmouth. [Interview session stops and resumes on 6/28/04]. Pendleton discusses his creative sources, particularly in the natural environment; more on the Vermont Natural Theater and the connection between that work and Pilobolus and Momix, the philosophical basis of his creativity; his class with Alison Chase and other classes at Dartmouth that influenced him including Don Cherry's jazz improvisational workshop and a lecture-demonstration by the Nikolais Louis Company; the formation of Pilobolus as a company; the company's early years; Alison Chase and Martha Clarke joining the company and the personal and creative dynamic that resulted; the creation of the work Untitled; the formation of the companies Crowsnest and Momix; more on Pilobolus' development and diverging paths of its founders; the support received by the company from Pierre Cardin.
