Biography
Dancer, actress, and journalist, Dorothy N. S. (Nina Sheridan) Russell was born March 23, 1924 in Paris, France, to American parents. Russell, who wrote successively under the names Nina Sheridan, Dorothy N. S. Russell, and Nina Russell began her journalism career as an assistant entertainment editor. From 1941-1943 she covered musical events for British weeklies and served as a radio scriptwriter and interviewer (U.S. Army) from 1943-1945. She was a United Press staff correspondent from 1945-1947 in London and Paris. In 1951, after having worked at different newspapers in Europe, Russell moved to the United States where she worked at the New York Post, Oklahoman & Times, Constitution-Press, and other newspapers. In 1954, she left journalism to study dance and began to perform in children's theater. Russell also studied ballet with Vitale Fokin and performed as a dancer with La Puma Opera Workshop, where she also worked as a choreographer. In 1958 Nina Russell began writing for Show Business, a trade newspaper, where she contributed a regular column, "The Dance." She created two special dance issues (1958-1959 and 1959-1960) for Show Business and also regularly published pieces in Dance Digest and Dance Magazine.
