Biography
Dancer, choreographer, and educator, Judith Scott was a founding member of Dance Incorporated in Chicago and later established her own company in New York. Born Judith Skwiot in Chicago, circa 1937, she attended Mundelein College and also completed a degree in dance education at Northwestern University. In 1963, she joined Gus Giordano in developing Dance Incorporated, a small company that featured ballet, jazz, and modern dance choreography. Scott was both a performer and modern dance choreographer for the group, which made frequent local television appearances and also had many engagements on college campuses. While based in Chicago, she also taught modern dance at Northwestern University and summer courses at the University of the West Indies in Mona, Jamaica. From 1969-1975, Scott taught at Barnard College, during which time she also formed the Judith Scott Dance Company (later the Judith Scott Dance Theater) and performed original pieces throughout the metropolitan New York area during the 1970s.
