- John Bell, Scottish surgeon and anatomist. The premier surgeon of Edinburgh for nearly twenty years, he left for Italy to recuperate after being thrown from a horse in 1817. Bell met the Shelleys in Rome in 1819 and had considerable contact with them thereafter, both professional and social.
