Description
1 volume (60 pages [15 folding leaves]) + inserts; 27 cm
Summary
Scrapbook collection of bibliographical citations of 17th and 18th century books on the subject of "characters." Most pages bear two mounted autograph bibliographical notes, some signed "P. B." One note includes the detail: "Seen at Rodds May 31, 1848." One note, in a 17th century hand, titled "The Character of an Atturney," is described and transcribed in the appendix of S. T. Irwin's 1897 edition of Earle's Microcosmography; Irwin was a former owner of this scrapbook. Laid in to the volume are: sixteen additional manuscript pieces, some double sheets, a few in another hand, mostly bibliographical citations; the title page and pages 5-6 of "The true picture of a modern whig reviv'd," 1707; a letter signed D. McLane[?] of 68 Great King St, Edinburgh, to "My dear Principal," dated 23 July 1853; and a printed Oxford University announcement from G. Rowley, Vice-Chancellor, dated 30 March 1835. All of the above laid into tan boards with the manuscript spine title, "Dr / BLISSs / Collect / tion / of / Cha- / [ra]cter"; with the bookseller's ticket of William George's Sons of Bristol.
