  • Disc 1 (ca. 55 min.). Madeleine M. Nichols speaks about her first experiences dancing, including at Thalia Mara's school with Hilda Butsova and Arthur Mahoney; other classes and significant experiences before college and at the University of Michigan; attending library school and her subsequent first jobs in New York; her first position with the Dance Division [at the New York Public Library for the Perfoming Arts] as a film cataloger; arranging the Library's original film documentations; development of the Library's film and video acquisition program; reflections on her early years at the Library; fund raising for the Dance Division during this period and the development of the original documentation program with the financial support of Jerome Robbins; her work with copyright issues and, briefly, her hiatus from the Library to attend law school and practice law; returning to the Dance Division as curator; cataloging policies and practices of the Dance Division; challenges of her work there; changes that occurred in the field during her time away from the Library; changing role of the Library regarding the recording of dance works; acquisitions during her tenure, including, briefly, the Ruben Ter-Arutunian collection
