3 boxes (circa 127 photoprints) : silver gelatin, black and white; 40 x 50 cm or smaller.
Summary
Collection is primarily comprised of portraits of New York theatre personalities, including Rose Bogdanoff "in the Chinese coat (1932)," Remo Bufano, Sterling Holloway, Mina Hager in Pierrot lunaire (1933), Liz Hull (Elizabeth Hull), Hall Johnson, Isamu Noguchi, Paul Robeson, Roger Stearns, Betty Starbuck, Thelma Tipson in The Garrick gaieties (1930), Waldine Williams as Reba in Run, little chillun' (1933), and Cora Witherspoon; there are also photoprints of marionettes designed by Robert Edmond Jones and constructed by Remo Bufano for the opera-oratorio Oedipus Rex by Igor Stravnisky (1931), as well as some unidentified.

Biography
Photographer Stella Furchgott Simon was born in Charleston, South Carolina and moved to Colorado at age eight. She graduated from East Denver High School, marrying businessman Adolphe Simon in 1890. After his death in 1917, Simon moved to New York City where she raised their three sons. She studied at Clarence H. White School of Modern Photography and also studied filmmaking in Germany, making a feminist avant-garde film, Hands (1932). Simon had a photography studio in New York City from approximately 1932 to the 1940s. She died in 1973.
