Summary
The Robert Hines papers contain materials for his books, The Composer's Point of View: Essays on Twentieth-Century Choral Music by Those Who Wrote It (originally published 1963; reprinted by Greenwood Press in 1980) and The Orchestral Composer's Point of View: Essays on Twentieth-Century Music by Those Who Wrote It (University of Oklahoma Press, 1970).

Biography
Music teacher, writer, and choral conductor, Robert Stephan Hines (born 1926), was responsible for several books on twentieth-century choral and orchestral music, including The Composer's Point of View (1963) and The Orchestral Composer's Point of View (1970). Born in Kingston, New York, Hines received his undergraduate degree from the Juilliard School of Music in 1952. He also earned a graduate degree from the University of Michigan in 1956, during which time he also served as the choral director for the General Motors Corporation. He held positions at several academic institutions over the course of his career, including the Southern Illinois University at Carbondale (1957-1961) and Wichita State University (1961-1971), before joining the faculty of the University of Hawaii at Manoa, where he was professor of music (1972-80) and later Dean of Arts and Humanities, before becoming a professor emeritus. Hines also edited or arranged over 125 choral works for a variety of music publishing companies.
