- Biography
- Johnson-Liff Associates was an independent casting agency established in 1975 by casting director and former stage manager Geoffrey Johnson and Vincent G. Liff. From its inception, Johnson-Liff was engaged by high profile Broadway productions. During the 1980s and 1990s, Johnson-Liff effectively dominated the New York theater scene, casting several imported hit British musicals, including Cats (1982), Les Miserables (1987), The Phantom of the Opera (1988), Miss Saigon (1991), and Sunset Boulevard (1994). In the area of musical theater, Johnson-Liff Associates also was responsible for the casting of many original American productions, including City of Angels (1989), Kiss of the Spider Woman (1993), Contact (2000), and The Producers (2001), as well as major revivals. Among the numerous dramatic productions cast by Johnson-Liff were the original plays, The Elephant Man (1979), The Dresser (1981), and Les Liaisons Dangereuses (1987), as well star-driven revivals, such as the 1992 production of Noel Coward's Private Lives, featuring Joan Collins. In addition to its work in theater, Johnson-Liff was active in film and television casting. Among the company's many televison credits were the mini-series, Edward and Mrs. Simpson (1977), the long-running soap opera, Another World (from 1983-1995), and the situation comedies, Full House and Kate and Allie (1984). The agency also cast such films as Somebody Killed Her Husband (1978), Wired (1989), The Inner Circle (1991) and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (1999). The company, which also was known as Johnson-Liff & Zerman from 1986 to 1993, was formally dissolved in 2002, shortly before the death of co-founder Vincent Liff in 2003.
