Biography
Henry Jarvis Raymond (1820-1869), an American journalist and politician, was the first editor of the New York Times. He founded the New-York Daily Times in 1851 with George Jones. Raymond was also a member of New York's Whig and Republican parties and active in state and national politics. During his political career, he was an assemblyman and later speaker of the New York State Assembly, lieutenant-governor of New York, and a member of the United States House of Representatives.
