Description

Summary

Leather-covered wooden box bound with metal straps; fitted with lock and with lugs at sides to hold a carrying strap; lid slightly vaulted; bottom largely restored. Probably made in Paris between 1480 and 1520.
Woodcut mounted inside the lid (Schreiber, W.L. Manuel de l'amateur de la gravure sur bois et sur métal au XVe siècle, v. 1, no. 750) of the Almighty enthroned with Evangelists and angels, here hand colored, had appeared in the Verdun missal printed by Jean Du Pré in Paris in 1481.

Cofferets or caskets of this type are known to have been used as dispatch and book boxes. It is possible that, with the addition of a consecrated altar stone, they may have served as portable altars.
