  • Contemporary French light brown calf, gilt, with infillings of black paint; tools include stylized foliage and an azured stirrup-shaped tool repeated 4 times in the central part of each board. Presumably bound in Paris for Thomas Wotton; included (lot 299) in the list of 24 lots in the Earl of Carnarvon's Bretby Library sale (Sotheby's, April 8-9, 1919) that are identified as Wotton bindings in Nixon, H.M. Twelve books in fine bindings (Oxford, 1953), p. 34; for discussion of similar bindings, classed by Nixon in group IIA of Wotton bindings, cf. p. 41. This workshop is called "Wotton Binder B" in The Henry Davis gift / Mirjam M. Foot. v. 1 (London, c1978), p. 144-147. Repaired by James Brockman; housed in a brown cloth clamshell case with felt lining, with ticket of J. & S. Brockman, binders, Wheatley, Oxford, England, inside front cover.
