Swan lake (Choreographic work : Fedorova-Fokine after Ivanov and Petipa, M)
Genre/Form
  • Dance.
  • Video.
Note
  • Disc 1 begins with brief dance segment before credits.
  • Some cast members change during different performances; for example, Margot Fonteyn and Michael Somes' roles are sometimes performed by Alicia Alonso and Igor Youskevitch.
  • Credits partially from book entitled Without permission, by Victor Jessen.
  • Notes by Alastair Macaulay: Act I, Pas de six was choreographed by Ashton in 1952, to the Waltz. Ashton expanded and revised this Waltz for six couples and Siegfried in 1963, using the same costumes. This was danced by the Royal Ballet until 1986. The Peasants dance is choreographed by Ninette de Valois, and this film shows two slightly differing versions. Act II, Jessen was preparing his ideal Swan Lake performance, and at four points shows the one-act Ballet Theatre version (mainly with Alicia Alonso as Odette) and, excludes the Sadler's Wells Ballet version (with Margot Fonteyn). The Sadler's Wells footage mainly shows Margot FOnteyn and Michael Somes but includes long-shot clips of Beryl Grey with John Field. The coprs dances show both Sadler's Wells and American Ballet Theatre. Act III, Jessen shows more than one version of the Sadler's Wells production with mainly Leslie Hurry designs. The Spanish, Hungarian and Polish dances are given in the traditional Sadler's Wells versions. The dance for the six princesses with ostrich feather fans is also traditional, and was retained until 1986. More than one staging of the denouement is seen. Also, on Odile's first entrance, Odette is briefly seen at the window, at least in one performance (never seen in any other version). Act IV, Odette is mainly Fonteyn, with Somes as Siegfried. There are some longshot clips of Nadia Nerina and Beryl Grey as Odette (possibly Violetta Elvin too), with John Field and others as Siegfried.
