Summary
The Joseph Attles Papers consist of some correspondence, professional and personal; contracts and financial documentation; programs of productions he appeared in; lyrics; clippings and a scrapbook of clippings regarding his career and other show business personalities (1950s-1960s). The bulk of the collection, however, consists of play scripts, including "Bubbling Brown Sugar" by Loften Mitchell, "C & W, John Henry," "Jericho-Jim" and "Prodigal Son" by Langston Hughes, "Troupers" and James de Jongh's "Do Lord Remember Me," which were productions in which he performed.

  • Joseph Attles is best known for his role of "Sportin' Life" in the 1950s revival of "Porgy and Bess" and for his role in the 1975 production of "Bubbling Brown Sugar." An actor, singer and dancer, his career spanned six decades. His Broadway debut was in "Blackbirds of 1928," a popular musical revue that later went on tour in Europe. In addition, Attles appeared in "La Belle Helene," "The Last of Mrs. Lincoln," "Jericho-Jim Crow," "Kwamina," "Tambourines to Glory," "Prodigal Son," "Black Girl" and "Day of Absence." He also performed in nightclubs including the Plantation Club in Harlem (1930s), Bricktop's (1950s), and the Cococabana (1960s), and in films and television (1960's and 1970's).
