- Summary
- The Gay Men of African Descent, Inc, records (1986-1998) document the development of the largest Black gay-run educational, social, and political organization in the United States. Records include board of directors organizing and leadership materials, a fairly comprehensive collection of newsletters which capture the organization's direction and programmatic activities from 1988 to 1999, and information on GMAD's funding sources. Documentation on the organization's earliest years are augmented by transcripts of oral history interviews with both early and active members who share accounts of GMAD's founding and struggle to develop into a full-fledged advocacy organization. There are transcripts for George Bellinger, Jeff Haskins, Kevin McGruder, Philip Reed, Colin Robinson, Kenneth Tolbert, Derwin Keith Vega, and C. Ralph Wilson.

- Biography (note)
- Gay Men of African Descent (GMAD) was founded in 1986 by the Reverend Charles Angel to build coalitions that would address and combat homophobia and racism, as well as HIV/AIDS. The organization represented the largest constituency of Black gay men on the East Coast, and is the nation's largest and oldest Black gay organization dedicated exclusively to the welfare of Black gay men. GMAD implemented its mission to empower Black gay men through education, social support, political advocacy, and health and wellness promotion, via a wide range of programs targeting Black "Men Who Have Sex With Men" (MSM) in the New York City metropolitan area.
- Among other programmatic activities undertaken by GMAD was the issue of the inequities of HIV/AIDS funding and outreach to Black gay men. Their programs reflected these efforts ranging from discussions at their weekly Friday Night Forums, peer counseling, and HIV/AIDS awareness campaigns to acknowledging advocates of the health of Black gay men. The monthly newsletter featured a schedule of GMAD's programming, original reporting, as well as information about the organization.
