Summary
  • James W. Gerard (1794-1874) was a prominent lawyer born in New York City. After graduating from Columbia, Gerard joined the New York Bar Association and became a prominent member of the city's legal community. He is notable for his work in creating the House of Refuge for the Reformation of Juvenile Delinquents in 1823, which was the first institution of its kind in the United States. Later, he became the Inspector of Common Schools.
  • The collection consists of one scrapbook containing personal correspondence; a journal from an 1863 trip to Europe; writings and speeches by James W. Gerard (senior) on crime and juvenile delinquency; obituaries and tributes on the death of Gerard in 1874. The scrapbook was created by Gerard's son, James Watson Gerard junior, himself a lawyer, Commissioner of Education, and a New York State senator; and father to James Watson Gerard III, the American ambassador to Germany , 1913-1917.
