- Summary
- The Merriam Family Genealogical Research Papers are comprised of genealogical notes, printed material, and correspondence between James S. Merriam for the preparation of a genealogy of the Merriam family. Much of Merriam's research was used by Charles Henry Pope for his bookMerriam Genealogy in England and America, published in 1906.
- This branch of the Merriam family descend from brothers Robert, George, and Joseph, who emigrated from Kent, England in 1638 and settled in Concord, Massachusetts. James Sheldon Merriam was born in 1829 in Port Leyden, Lewis County, New York. He studied law at Columbia University, graduating in 1854. He began pursuing genealogical research in 1880, and continued his studies of the Merriam family until his death in 1909.
