Summary
  • General George Stillman was born in Wethersfield, Connecticut, in 1751. He defended the coast of Maine from British attack during the American Revolution. He died in Machias, Maine, in 1799.
  • Stillman's papers include his diary (1775-1776), which records incidents following the capture of the British sloop Margaretta; a service certificate signed by Major General Charles Lee; letters and orders from Colonel and Indian agent John Allan; commissions signed by John Hancock, Jeremiah Powell, T. Cushing, Samuel Adams, and Moses Gill respectively for Stillman's rank in the militia from Major to Brigadier General; and a certificate signed by Paul Revere and other officers of St. Andrew's Lodge, Boston, certifying that George Stillman is a Master Mason (1788).
