Landscape prints – Germany – 19th century.

  • Date of publication from Ersch and Kayser.
  • Consists of t.p. and 8 full-page aquatints signed C.F. Thiele sculpsit (sculp., sculpt., sculps.), each accompanied by a leaf of descriptive letterpress. Letterpress to first 2 prints printed on recto and verso of leaves. Letterpress on laid paper; prints on heavier wove paper. Three prints, with legends "Stubbenkammer," "Arcona" and "Königsstuhl," are signed "Friedrich del." and are presumably after lost sepia watercolors by C.D. Friedrich, executed ca. 1803 after nature studies from 1801. For discussion, cf. Sumowski, no. 150-155 and 184-186; Börsch-Supan & Jähnig; article by O. Schmitt in Zeitschrift des Deutschen Vereins für Kunstwissenschaft, Bd. 3 (1936), p. 421-433.
  • Issued with plates in b&w and in hand-colored state. Cf. Ersch.
  • A second part, containing 4 aquatints by Thiele and J.B. Hössel (one is anonymous; none is after Friedrich), was issued the same year. Cf. Kayser; Sumowski, no. 150-155.
