Helen Gebig speaks with Diana Chapman about seeing ballet for first time, New York City Ballet's production of George Balanchine's Swan lake; her personal background and feeling of connection to Balanchine; various ballets and her responses to them; Balanchine's sources of inspiration; changes in Balanchine's ballet La valse since his death with particular reference to the colors of the costumes; Balanchine's molding of the ballets for individual dancers; her favorite dancers from the past, as well as the present; the sexual component of ballet in general, and in Balanchine's ballet The prodigal son and Edward Villella's dancing, in particular.
