Summary

• Manuscript copies of 151 letters chiefly from Voltaire to Marie de Vichy Chamrond, marquise du Deffand, with some replies of the marquise to Voltaire. Letters dated chiefly from 1750 to 1770; the first letter (ca. 1740) is undated; letters 2-5 are from 1749, 1736, 1734 and 1732.
• Manuscript in brown ink, on both sides of late 18th-cent. paper, in at least 2 unidentified hands, probably secretarial. Watermarks: "Sebille van Ketel & Wassenbergh"; arms with initials "SKW"; "D&C Blauw."
• Paged in ms., in a contemporary hand: 1-365, 365-419, 408-429, 429bis, 430-535, [536, blank], 536-539. Blank leaf at end. Pages 536-539 (conjugate leaves 2-3 in last gathering) detached from binding. Letters are numbered 1-150; the last is unnumbered.
• Text within frames of plummet. Scattered emendations and marginalia in ink; annotated throughout in pencil, in an unidentified later hand, including indications of publication status of most letters. Three ms. notes in ink, in an unidentified later hand, on loose slips, inserted.
