- The AM1 collection was assembled by Elliott Shapiro, nephew of Louis Bernstein. Together with his uncle (as Shapiro, Bernstein Inc.) they were one of the major publishers of American popular sheet music in the mid-20th century. With Harry Dichter, he authored "Early American sheet music: it's lure and lore (1941, reprinted and retitled "Handbook of early American sheet music, 1768-1889"), based (in part) on this collection. Elliott Shapiro died February 2, 1956.

- The AM1 collection was assembled by Elliott Shapiro, nephew of Louis Bernstein.
