Summary
  • These papers of William Chandler, Lieutenant in the United States Navy, include a logbook, a journal, text books and notes about seamanship and navigation, and other related materials. Included is a logbook of the U.S. prize schooner Patuxent which Chandler, the ship's commander, kept from October 7-November 25, 1845 while en route from Monrovia to New York. The first part of the logbook is missing, and entries end while the ship was in Bermuda undergoing repairs. There are remarks about chronometer no. 114 at the back of the volume.
  • Chandler's journal of a cruise aboard the U.S.S. Constellation from Norfolk, Virginia to the West Indies, Key West, and Pensacola, Florida, contains entries made between July 28, 1835 and February 15, 1836. He mentions reinforcements and protection given to residents of Tampa, Florida. Other materials in the collection include text books on seamanship in the U.S. Navy (1832); watch, quarter, and station bills of the U.S.S. Grampus (1837); notes on seamanship (1839); stations and missives of the U.S.S. St. Mary's (1848); watch and quarter bills, stations, and missives of a frigate (1854); and a list of the leading lights of St. George's (Irish) Channel (1864).
