- William B. Burris was a staff clerk in the United States Navy and kept this diary on board the U.S.S. Delaware during a cruise from Portsmouth, New Hampshire to an Asiatic station and back to New York. Entries date from 1867-1870, and laid in to the volume are the following: the Shanghai News-Letter from May 18, 1869 and February 11, 1870; Japan Herald from September 18, 1869; and Japan Gazette from May 21, 1870. A clipping from the New York Tribune listing those killed in battle at Bull Run was removed from the volume ca. 1938 and transferred to the library's newspaper room.
