- Summary
- John Chalmers, an officer in the British Navy, kept this journal during a naval expedition to l'Orient, France from September 15-October 29, 1746. The British forces intended to take l'Orient, depot of the French East India Company, but the expedition ended in complete failure. Included are a letter of transmittal to the Duke of Montagu dated December 9, 1746 and a drawing (folio, in color) titled "Sketch of the Ground near l'Orient in Brittany with the Attack made on that Place in Septr. 1746 by the British Forces under the Command of Lieut. General St. Clair." Holograph.
