1 print : etching, engraving, hand-colored; 26 x 42 cm., plate mark 23 x 30 cm.
Summary
Representation of a rather joyless dancing lesson. The woman at center stands in the position termed in ballet "à la seconde," her right arm curved over her head. The man at left, possibly the dancing master, appears to be exhorting or correcting her. In the background at right, an impossibly thin and attenuated woman stands on three-quarter pointe, facing away from the viewer. Also present are a man and three women, who watch the proceedings with varying degrees of interest.

Biography (note)
  • The printing and publishing house of Maison Martinet was founded in 1796 by Aaron Martinet, 1762-1841, who became well-known for publishing satirical prints. His shop on the Rue de Coq in Paris was famous for its window displays of the latest prints, which may have included this print.
