Description
1 print : lithograph on tone block, b&w; 42 x 32 cm.
Summary
Portrayal of three dancers in action, dressed in theatricalized folk costumes. The man at left, who has a grotesque profile, seems to be confronting the other two, an attractive young woman and man who appear to be a couple. At the top of the picture is a portrait head of the Italian dancer-choreographer Pasquale Borri.
Subjects
Genre/Form
Lithographs.
Note
  • Captioned at top: Pasqvale Borri.
  • Captioned at bottom with the dancers' names: H[err?] Frappart, Fle [Fraulein?] Ricci H, Vienna.
Biography (note)
  • Probably a scene from Pasquale Borri's comic ballet Redowa und der gefoppte Bräutigam [Redowa and the duped bridegroom] (music, Paolo Giorza and Matthias Strebinger), first presented at the Hoftheater, Vienna, in July 1856. Among the characters were Redowa, danced by Fraulein Ricci; Karol, danced by Herr Vienna; and Paposki, danced by Herr Frappart. The ballet may have included the dance called the Redowa polka, a popular part of Fanny Cerrito and Arthur Saint-Leon's ballet La vivandière, itself a much-imitated work. Borri had created ballets with similar titles (Katty ossia la vivandiera, Ketty la vivandiera, and simply La vivandiera) beginning in 1851, and probably had some knowledge of the original.
