Summary
Illustrated sheet music for a song beginning: Ye nymphs of Bath prepare the lay. Includes music for accompanied voice and flute. The illustration depicts a scene at a fête champêtre: a woman dances in a garden, partly encircled by male and female companions, some of whom appear to be gazing elsewhere. Her soft, relatively narrow skirt, feathered headdress, and the V shape of her bodice subtly suggest oriental influences. A tiered fountain plays to her left; the trees behind her companions enclose the space to the left and in the background.

  • The musical setting is by Maurice Greene, an English organist and composer of secular as well as religious music. The Emelia of the title, whose name is spelled Amelia in the body of the song, may be Princess Amelia, 1711-1786, the second daughter of George II of Great Britain.
  • Although this illustration does not include the artist's name or signature, it may have been engraved by George Bickham, 1706?-1771, for the song collection The musical entertainer, the first edition of which appeared in 1737.

Although this illustration does not include the artist's name or signature, it may have been engraved by George Bickham, 1706?-1771, for the song collection The musical entertainer, the first edition of which appeared in 1737.
