Description
1 print : engraving, b&w; diam. image 16 cm.
Summary
Representation of a well-dressed bridal couple, their postures suggesting dance movement, surrounded by equally elegant guests. Musicians play in a gallery at right. In the background is a view of Venice's lagoon. The two men in the doorway at left have been identified in the British Museum's online catalog as the commedia dell'arte characters Magnifico and his assistant Zanni. M.A. Katritzky's The art of commedia: a study in the commedia dell'arte 1560-1620 with special reference to the visual records (2006) identifies the first man as Pantalone.

  • Title derived from British Museum online catalog.
Biography (note)
  • Print made by the engraver Johann Theodor de Bry after an engraving by Hendrik Goltzius, made in 1584 after a drawing by Dirck Barendsz. Barendsz, who was born and died in Amsterdam, worked for a time in Titian's workshop in Venice. This print reverses the image in Goltzius's engraving, so that the bridal couple faces left rather than right.
