Description
1 print : engraving, hand-colored; 38 x 29 cm., plate mark 28 x 20 cm.
Summary
Costume design for Venus, the Roman goddess of love and beauty, known as Aphrodite in Greek mythology. Fashionably dressed and coiffed, she holds in her right hand what appears to be an apple, possibly a reference to the Greek myth of the judgment of Paris, in which she contended with her fellow goddesses Juno (Hera) and Minerva (Athena) for the prize of a golden apple, signifying the fairest among them. As the caption indicates, this costume was worn in various theatrical works that included the appearance of the goddess.
