Biography (note)

• L'Hipermestra (music, Francesco Cavalli; libretto, Giovanni Andrea Moniglia; scenery, Ferdinando Tacca) was first performed at the Teatro dell'Accademia degli Immobili, Florence, in 1658, on the occasion of the birth of a son to King Philip of Spain. Derived from ancient Greek myth, the story treats the dilemma of Hypermestra, whose loyalties are torn between her father and lover.
• Etching made by Silvio degli Alli after a design by Ferdinando Tacca. The online catalog of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, which holds copies of other scenes from L'Hipermestra, notes that these etchings were made in two plates, one for the proscenium and one for the scene onstage. This print was made from the latter plate.
