Biography (note)
  • This lithograph is based on an oil painting by Richard Buckner, titled "Marie Adeline Plunkett," held by the Birmingham Museums and Art Gallery. The dancer wears a pink bolero, with pink decorations on her skirt and in her hair. According to the museums' online catalog, Buckner based her pose on that of the classical statue of Mercury in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence.
  • Various versions of this print exist, though some may be later reproductions; the dancer's costume may be pink, blue, or, as in this example, uncolored. The version held by the Victoria & Albert Museum in London is captioned "Madmoiselle [sic] Plunkett of Her Majesty's Theatre." Like the uncaptioned print held by the National Portrait Gallery in London, it was printed by M & N Hanhart and published by John Mitchell in 1854. A copy formerly in the collection of ballerina Alexandra Danilova is captioned "Adeline Plunkett in La Mañola," an identification also made by the Victoria & Albert and George Chaffee, in the article cited above. The Spanish-style bolero Plunkett wears in this print seems to bear this out, since La Mañola was a balleticized Spanish dance performed to music from Gaetano Donizetti's opera La favorite (1840). Her costume, however, is not the same as in other depictions of her performances of La Mañola.
  • Despite her apparently English name, Adeline Plunkett was born in Belgium, made her debut in Trieste, and danced at Her Majesty's Theatre in London before becoming a principal ballerina at the Paris Opéra, where she performed until 1857.
