Additional Authors
Cruikshank, George, 1792-1878.
Description
1 print : etching, hand-colored; 25 x 35 cm.
Summary
Satirical representation of the quadrille, a dance for four couples, as danced in a private home. At center, a short man tries valiantly to partner two taller ladies. The other participants pay scant attention to the dance: one man turns his head to chat with the pianist, and the lady and gentleman near the fireplace are more engrossed in each other. The fourth pair has positioned themselves in readiness to dance, but even they seem susceptible to distraction.
Subjects
Genre/Form
  • Cartoons (Commentary)
  • Etchings.
Note
  • Monogram at lower left.
Biography (note)
  • This print is a version of George Cruikshank's print of the same title, signed by Cruikshank and published in London by H. Humphrey in 1817. The format of this print is larger and there are stylistic differences in the drawing. Between them, the brothers George and Robert Cruikshank produced several cartoons satirizing the quadrille, a ballroom dance popular in the nineteenth century. In a day with more relaxed copyright laws, these cartoons appear to have been frequently copied and issued by different publishers.
