Summary
Representation of the quadrille, a dance for four couples, who are seen joining hands in a circle. One man, his back to the viewer, appears to be wearing a military uniform. A fifth couple converses at left. The setting appears to be a ballroom, lit by a chandelier. A fiddler, perhaps part of a musical ensemble, plays on an elevated stand at left.

  • A print of this title, published by McCleary, is listed in A.S.W. Rosenbach's A catalogue of the works illustrated by George Cruikshank and Isaac and Robert Cruikshank in the library of Harry Elkins Widener, published by Harvard University in 1918. The brothers George and Robert Cruikshank produced several cartoons satirizing the quadrille, a ballroom dance popular in the nineteenth century. The signature I.R. Cruikshank, used by Robert Cruikshank, appears on Quadrilles-- practising for fear of accidents, a print stylistically similar to this one.
