  • Patricia Hearst was the grand-daughter of publishing magnate William Randolph Hearst. She was nineteen years old when she was kidnapped from her Berkeley home, on February 4, 1974, by members of a leftist urban guerrilla group, the Symbionese Liberation Army, which was active 1973-1975. Patricia Hearst made a statement that she had renounced her life of privilege and the capitalist system which supported it, and had been given the revolutionary nom de guerre "Tania." In a 1974 tape released by the SLA, Hearst stated: "I have been given the choice of 1) being released in a safe area or 2) join the forces of the Symbionese Liberation Army and fighting for my freedom and the freedom of all oppressed people. I have chosen to stay and fight. I have been given the name Tania after a comrade who fought alongside Che [Guevara] in Bolivia for the people of Bolivia."
