Details
- Description
- 1 print : engraving, b&w; 16 x 28 cm.
- Summary
- A westerner's recreation of a performance by conjurors and acrobats in a street in China. The buildings are decorated with Chinese architectural motifs, and pagodas are visible in the distance. The performers and most of the spectators appear to be male, and figures in western garb and turbans mingle with the crowd. The performers, several of whom wear queues, execute feats of balance on poles; one man climbs a rope suspended mysteriously in the air; another man plunges a sword into a wicker basket. Human body parts appear to be part of the performance, and apparently excite no consternation among the viewers.
