Summary
These papers of the painter Thomas Sully consist of three volumes. One is a register of paintings he executed between 1801 and 1871, which includes a complete list of all miniatures, oil portraits, and other paintings. Another is a journal of Sully's activities in 1792-1793 and 1799-1846, including paintings executed by him, financial affairs, visitors he received, calls made, trips to England and France (1837-1838), annual "review of concerns," valuations of work done, and a financial statement. The third volume is a transcript of Sully's "Hints for Pictures," 1809-1871, which describes techniques for painting portraits, ingredients for colors, care and preservation of paintings, criticisms of other artists and explanations of their paintings and techniques.
