Summary
Sir John Ross was an English admiral and Arctic explorer. These letters and documents were addressed to him and mainly deal with the preparations for his voyage to the Arctic in search of a northwest passage. Included are letters from Sir John Barrow, Secretary of the Admiralty, regarding the boat built for the expedition, supplies, men, pay, and other matters; a letter and other documents from Sir Thomas B. Martin, Admiral of the Fleet, which include an order of sailing; letters from officers at the Navy office regarding ships and equipment; an official signed copy of the Articles of a Convention between France and the Allied Powers (April 23, 1814) transmitted to Ross by Admiral Johnstone; and letters from Sir Thomas Saumarez referring to the movements of the fleet in search of the enemy while Ross was serving in the Navy, and the unjust treatment of Ross after being severely wounded in the "Surinam."
